Expert Interview on Inkless Treatment
We sat down with the owner at ScarLab Skin Studio, Lorraine Bandala to discuss her revolutionary approach to scar treatment that’s changing lives without ink, pain, or invasive procedures.
When it comes to scar treatment, most people assume they’ll need to endure painful procedures, expensive surgeries, or treatments that leave them with significant downtime. But what if there was a completely different approach—one that works with your body’s natural healing process rather than against it?
We spoke with Lorraine at ScarLab, pioneers in Inkless Scar Revision (ISR), to understand how this innovative technique is transforming the world of scar treatment. Her insights reveal a gentler path to scar improvement that’s accessible to more people than ever before.

The Range of Treatable Scars
Q: What types of scars do you treat—and which respond best to non-invasive scar removal?
“We treat a wide range of mild to moderate scars,” the Lorraine explains. “The treatment is ideal for scars that are flat, fully healed, and stable.”
Their comprehensive approach covers an impressive spectrum of scar types:
- Stretch marks (striae)
- Surgical scars including C-section, tummy tuck, and breast surgery
- Self-harm scars
- Scars from cuts, abrasions, or accidents
- Burn scars and skin graft scars
- Mastectomy and other cancer-related surgical scars
- Dark (hyperpigmented), white (hypopigmented), or multicolored scars
- Scars from gender-affirming surgery
“The sooner you treat a fully healed scar, the better the potential outcome,” she notes. “However, even older scars can show visible improvement.”
A Revolutionary Approach to Comfort
Q: Can you walk us through your method of painless scar reduction and what makes it different from traditional options?
“At ScarLab, we specialise in an advanced inkless technique for scar reduction that’s both safe and comfortable—without the use of pigments, chemicals, or invasive procedures.”
The process itself is elegantly simple. “Using a tattoo pen with a sterile, single-use needle (carefully selected based on the scar size and area), we gently work over the scar to stimulate natural skin regeneration. This technique is designed to trigger the body’s own healing response, improving the texture and appearance of scars over time.”
But here’s what makes it truly revolutionary: “Unlike traditional treatments or Permanent Makeup (PMU) methods that often require numbing cream or anaesthesia, our inkless method is virtually painless. Most clients describe the sensation as similar to an electric toothbrush gliding across the skin—a bit ticklish or mildly uncomfortable in sensitive areas like the lower abdomen or hips, but never painful.”
Working With Nature, Not Against It
Q: How does your approach support the skin’s natural healing process?
“Our entire approach is built around stimulating and supporting the skin’s own natural ability to heal and regenerate—without the use of ink, harsh chemicals, or invasive methods,” Lorraine emphasises.
The preparation phase is crucial to their success. “Before we begin treatment, we conduct a thorough consultation and skin assessment, carefully reviewing your medical history, allergies, and any medications (such as blood thinners or isotretinoin) that could impact your healing. This personalised approach ensures your skin is in the best possible condition for treatment.”
What truly sets them apart is their innovative preparation protocol. “One of the key elements that sets ScarLab apart is our revolutionary skin preparation protocol. This specially formulated, non-invasive prep solution helps to ‘wake up’ and energise the skin’s cellular functions, support cell communication and regeneration, and prime the skin for a healthier healing response.”
Lorraine explains the science behind this approach: “Since we’re working with skin that may already be damaged or compromised, this preparation is crucial—it allows us to treat scars gently while enhancing the skin’s ability to recover and restore itself from within.”
Advanced Ingredients and Techniques

Q: Do you use any specific ingredients, tools, or techniques that help fade scars safely?
“Yes, at ScarLab, we use a combination of advanced tools, targeted serums, and clinically-informed protocols to safely and effectively reduce the appearance of scars.”
Their signature technique goes beyond simple needling: “Our signature approach involves a specialised device designed to gently needle the surface of the skin—stimulating a natural healing response—while simultaneously delivering a custom blend of healing serums directly into the scar tissue.”
The serum formulation is carefully crafted, typically including:
- Vitamins that nourish and support skin regeneration
- Natural botanical extracts known for their soothing and anti-inflammatory properties
- Healing agents that promote collagen production and tissue repair
“This dual-action technique not only triggers the body’s own collagen response but also infuses the skin with restorative ingredients exactly where they’re needed most—deep within the damaged area.”
Safety remains paramount throughout the process. “Most importantly, we maintain the highest standards of hygiene and safety throughout every step of the process. All equipment is thoroughly sterilised, and we adhere to strict protocols to prevent cross-contamination—an essential priority whenever performing any form of skin penetration.”
Setting Realistic Expectations
Q: What can someone expect after one session? How many sessions are typically needed?
“After your first Inkless Treatment session, most clients begin to notice visible improvements in the colour, texture, and overall appearance of the scar or stretch mark. The skin may look slightly more even-toned, smoother, and healthier as the natural healing process is activated.”
However, they’re careful to set realistic expectations: “It’s important to understand that scar and stretch mark revision is a progressive treatment, and optimal results occur gradually over time. On average, we recommend a series of 3 to 5 sessions to achieve the most noticeable and long-lasting improvement.”
The number of sessions varies based on several factors:
- The age and depth of the scar/stretch mark
- Your skin type and natural healing capacity
- Lifestyle factors (e.g., hydration, sun exposure, skin care habits)
- How well your skin responds to the treatment
“Some clients may see dramatic results sooner, while others with older or more fibrotic scars may require additional sessions for significant change,” they explain. “During your consultation, we’ll assess your skin’s condition and create a personalised treatment plan based on your unique needs and goals.”
Understanding Side Effects and Recovery
Q: Are there any side effects or downtime involved in your treatments?
“Yes, as with any skin-penetrating treatment, there are some mild and temporary side effects associated with the Inkless Technique. However, these are completely normal and expected as part of the skin’s natural healing response,” the team explains.
They outline what clients can expect immediately after treatment:
- Redness and mild swelling in the treated area
- Slight itchiness or sensitivity over the following 1–3 days
- A sensation similar to mild sunburn
“These reactions typically subside within a few days and are part of the normal post-treatment healing process.”
For clients with darker skin tones, they provide additional context: “It’s also common for the treated area to appear temporarily darker in the first few days. This is due to melanin activity in response to skin stimulation and is a standard part of the healing cycle. Over time, the pigmentation will begin to lighten and even out, revealing improved texture and tone as the skin regenerates.”
The recovery support is comprehensive: “To support recovery and minimize irritation, we provide a soothing aftercare balm to apply at home, along with clear aftercare instructions. Following these guidelines helps reduce discomfort, prevent complications, and optimize your results.”
“Our treatments are designed to be low-downtime, meaning you can return to most normal activities shortly after your session. However, we recommend avoiding direct sun exposure, swimming, and harsh skin products during the healing period.”

Real Client Transformations
Q: Can you share a story of a client who saw a noticeable change in their skin or confidence after scar treatment?
The personal stories are what truly illuminate the impact of this treatment. “Absolutely — some of the most rewarding moments come from seeing our clients’ confidence transform alongside their skin.”
“One of our very first clients—who also happens to be my sister—came to ScarLab hoping to improve the appearance of her Caesarean section scar and Linea Nigra (the dark line that can remain on the abdomen post-pregnancy). After just one session, she was amazed by the visible improvement. The scar had already begun to soften, the pigmentation started to fade, and she felt a renewed sense of comfort and pride in her body.”
Another transformation stands out: “Another client, who came in with a prominent post-surgical scar, was equally thrilled. After her first treatment, she noticed a dramatic change in the scar’s texture and color, and shared how much more confident she felt wearing clothes that once made her self-conscious. She’s now excited for her second session and looking forward to even greater results.”
“These kinds of transformations are not only skin-deep — they’re emotional. At ScarLab, our goal is not just to reduce scars, but to help people reconnect with their bodies and feel good in their skin again.”
Addressing Common Misconceptions
Q: What are the biggest misconceptions about scar reduction treatments?
“One of the most common misconceptions is the pain level involved in scar reduction procedures,” Lorraine explains. “As I have mentioned earlier, many people assume the treatment will be quite painful, but in reality, it’s much more tolerable than expected. Most clients describe the sensation as similar to an electric toothbrush gently passing over the skin — slightly ticklish, but not painful. We take every step to ensure your comfort throughout the process.”
Cost expectations also vary widely: “Another frequent misunderstanding is the cost of the treatment. Some people anticipate that it will be extremely expensive, while others are surprised that it’s not as inexpensive as they assumed. It’s important to understand that the price reflects more than just the session itself — it includes the amount of time for professional training, certifications, licensing, insurance, and the high-quality materials we use to deliver safe and effective results.”
Their commitment to accessibility is clear: “At ScarLab, we truly value our clients and do our best to make treatments as accessible as possible. That’s why we offer package deals and flexible payment options, so more people can benefit from our services without feeling overwhelmed by the financial commitment.”

Finding the Right Specialist
Q: Do you have advice for someone looking for a scar specialist in their area?
“Yes — choosing the right specialist is an important decision, and I always encourage people to take their time and do thorough research. Look into the specialist’s credentials, training, and experience, as well as their professionalism and communication style. Reading client testimonials and checking reviews or ratings can also offer valuable insight into the quality of their work and how they treat their clients.”
But beyond credentials, they emphasize character: “Most importantly, pay attention to the genuineness of the specialist. A trustworthy practitioner is someone who truly cares about your well-being, listens to your concerns, and is honest about whether a treatment is suitable for you — even if that means saying no. It’s essential to find someone who prioritizes ethics over profit, and who’s committed to delivering results in a safe, respectful, and compassionate manner.”
“Your comfort, safety, and trust should always come first.”
Customised Approaches for Different Needs
Q: Are there certain types of scars or skin tones that require a customised approach?
“At ScarLab, we welcome all skin tones, and the Inkless Technique is suitable for a wide range of clients. However, certain scar types and medical conditions require a customized approach — or may not be suitable for this treatment at all.”
They’re transparent about limitations: “While the Inkless Technique is a safe and effective option for many, your health and safety are always our top priority. Some conditions are not suitable for this treatment.”
Specifically regarding keloid scars: “Unfortunately, keloid scars are not ideal for the Inkless Technique. These scars are raised and extend beyond the original wound area, are caused by overactive collagen production, and can respond unpredictably to skin stimulation. Keloid scars often require medical treatment, such as corticosteroid injections. If needed, we’re happy to refer you to a qualified medical professional.”
The Future of Scar Treatment

Whether you’re dealing with surgical scars, stretch marks, or other types of skin damage, the insights from ScarLab demonstrate that effective scar treatment doesn’t have to be painful, invasive, or inaccessible.
