Morgan’s Story of Building a Flourishing Day Spa Business
Discover Morgan’s journey from tomboy to spa owner, her wellness philosophy, and her unique approach to self-care and client tranquility in our latest interview.
Did your childhood influence your choice of career?
As a beauty therapist – no haha I was the biggest tomboy
But I have always been interested in the body, wanting to be a physiotherapist from primary school and then going to Uni for a single day before realising I like making people feel better about themselves and that wellness is my calling. At 22 I was diagnosed with an auto immune illness that really did take control of my life for a while; it forced me to slow down and now I have learnt the importance of taking time out for yourself.
How does your average day unfold and what does it look like?
Coffee! I like my commute to work, listening to music I enjoy thinking about the day ahead, then once I get to work the day stays pretty calm. A great benefit of working in a day spa.
I’ve worked a few jobs where it can be rushed and not much turn around time and then having to switch from fast pace to slow, nurturing nature can be difficult, that’s why I ensure 30 minutes between clients to be able to give our full attention to the person in front of us and stay mindful.
What do you love about your work?
As much as it hurts seeing people come in upset, tired or stressed it absolutely warms my heart to see the change once their treatment is completed, once they’ve had someone look after them, even just for a little while and now they are ready to battle whatever may come their way (or go home for a nap)
Do you listen to any music or podcasts that inspire you?
In the past few years I’ve really being getting into strong women artists. I think one of the playlists was called strong women anthems lol. Thelma Plum, Camp Cope, Aretha Franklin and even a little Cardi B for some reason really inspire me to create a space for women where they can be themselves.
What are your strategies in achieving a good work-life balance?
Sunday is my day. I feel no guilt, the phone doesn’t need to be answered, the vacuuming doesn’t need to be done. I try and live by the advice I give; it’s okay to do nothing.
What nourishes your own skin wellness?
I get monthly massages and a facial every six weeks, it’s so important for beauty therapists to get treatments too, not only for their own wellbeing but also to know how it feels being on the table.
Who are the people you admire?
Mum, she’s such a beautiful family focussed individual.
What locations are on your travel list?
Spain, Ireland and Costa Rico
What is your idea of true luxury?
Being on your own timeframe
Your favourite relaxing thing to do, for you?
I want to say go for a walk or read a book but honestly my favourite thing to do to relax is bring my pillow and blanket to the lounge room, find something good to binge and have a cheese platter. That fills my cup.
If you had any advice for someone looking to start out in a career in this industry, what would it be?
Research! Research what your client wants, what they need and know that everyone is different and try to cater to that.
