We caught up with Courtney, of See your Beauty at Daw Park, South Australia, this week to chat about her new business and how it feels to take a leap of faith.
Tell us about your own skin treatment journey & how you came to work in the industry.
As a teen I was always a 3-step girl – cleansing, toning and moisturing! Plus my mum was an influence & encouraged me to look after my skin. I have always had good skin but I actually didn’t aspire to be in the beauty industry, I was going to be an interior designer. But when I became a mum I revisited the idea. I went and did a lash extension course but I was severely allergic! I was going to service all of the sensitive clients but I would have been sick every week.
So I focussed on lash lifts and then added to my services with brows and down the track began to incorporate skin services to my work. I am where I am now because upon getting shingles, I met Bryony (of B Acupuncture) (who helped to heal me). During my treatment time our conversations led to an opportunity to work in her clinic – and so here I happily am.
What inspired you to set up your own clinic?
I wanted to work for myself, where I had a balance in work and family. I was also keen to not work out of my home studio anymore but to set up a facial & beauty business that I could establish regular clients now that I had more time (with the kids off at school!).
Can you share the story behind the name of your clinic, See your Beauty?
When I was at my home studio I was Lash Wellness Studio, and when I moved more into the facials I was inspired to look at within your inner beauty, hence the eye logo. Working with Bryony of B Acupuncture, I have learnt so much more about how your inner health affects your skin and overall wellness and I wanted to focus on that.
How does your clinic’s philosophy shape the treatments and services you offer?
Our philosophy revolves around a holistic approach to wellness and bringing out your inner beauty.
How do you stay updated with the latest advancements in skincare and wellness?
In my approach I don’t always want to be updated and follow the latest trend, I want people to be healthy from the inside out and stick to traditional methods of beauty. I am looking at adding Baccul massage. I am looking at what services I can add that align with our values.
What can clients expect when they come into your clinic?
A warm and nurturing experience. Coming from my home studio, I am very aware of making the experience very welcoming. I sometimes find the Beauty Industry a little toxic and I want to make it warm, peaceful and if you have any questions, you can feel comfortable in asking them. If women need to bring their children to the appointment, they can.
What have been your biggest challenges in running your own skin clinic?
From a day to day view, making sure clients are booking, retaining those clients and adding more services that will enhance my clients experience.
Working inside an acupuncture clinic I am more aware of people having health concerns, so I like to work with natural ingredients. I like to work with their natural skin barrier, not against them and use products that contain collagen, omega’s that can help boost your skin from the inside out.
Looking forward, what are your main goals for the clinic and how do you plan to achieve them?
Generating awareness of my clinic and what I offer. It is my goal to create a beautiful experience for my clients. Finding people who want the traditional treatments. As people start to age, I want to keep treatments more traditional so they can achieve the best results without compromising their skin.
How do you see the skin treatment and wellness industry evolving in the next few years? I look at this different to other people. I am hoping that like fashion, we will have gone so far forward that we have to come back to traditional & more natural treatments and we will learn from treatments such as botox that are ageing us more and are harmful to the body. So then I can help you on your anti-ageing journey and the industry will pare back on such treatments that are not helpful.
